Thematic Essay Checklist Directions: Make sure this draft illustrates everything that is in this checklist. Now that you are in 8 th grade you need to become your own coach, and like the best coaches of basketball teams, you need to be a stickler with yourself. You need to be super tough. If you do something on the checklist, but only do it once or twice, will you check off “Yes!” and say, “I’m done!? ” No Way! At least not if you want to do well on this essay. Structure Overall I stated theme of the text & made it clear why this theme was correct. I included a counter-claim that described what others may think theme is. In the end, I made it clear that my theme was the correct theme. Lead After hooking the reader, I informed the reader of the story's title and author. I gave a brief summary of the story. I introduced my theme that I plan to develop. Transitions I use transitions to lead the readers from paragraph to paragraph of my essay. I use phrases such as now some may argue, while this may be true, its is also the case that, despite this, as stated earlier, taken as a whole, this is significant because, the evidence points to, & and by doing so. Ending In the conclusion , I re-explain my theme using different words than the introduction. I offer a message to my readers that I did not previously mention in my essay (maybe offering additional insights, implications, questions, or challenges ) Organization I started my paper with a strong introduction. I organized my 3 body paragraphs & counterclaim paragraph logically. I ended my paper with a strong conclusion. Not Yet Starting To Yes!
Development Elaboration I used 3 pieces of text evidence (including citations) that clearly supported my theme. I introduced all text evidence by stating the source it came from (ex. “Bradbury writes…”). I analyzed/explained the evidence I used to support my theme as well as my counter-claim. Meaning I made sure all my explanations led my reader to agree with my theme. Craft (Essayist tone) I did not use pronouns in my writing (such as I, you, me, my, our, we, etc. ). I did not use contractions in my writing (such as can’t, don’t won’t, etc. ). I used an academic vocabulary and varied my word choice in order to affect my reader in particular ways. Conventions Spelling I used accurate spelling of all words. Punctuation I edited my paper carefully for punctuation errors. Capitalization I edited my paper closely for errors in capitalization. Typos I edited my paper closely for all typos. MLA Format Citations I followed MLA guidelines to cite all text based details. Example: “quote” (page 5). Heading I used the proper MLA heading.
