Why Theatre? ❏ Theater arose due to the lack of entertainment provided to the late time period ❏ It combined social classes ranging from rich nobels to poor citizens ❏ Many people left their jobs to attend the performances
What Was it Like To Attend the Theater? ❏ Elizabethan theatre was looked down on by London ❏ There was a large variety of social class and races ❏ Diseases were spread when people grouped together at theatre; the plague ❏ The attendees were very rowdy ❏ Attendees acted like modern sport spectators ❏ Known to throw rotten fruit at the performers; rotten tomatoes ❏ Performances were always live, open aired ❏ Performance most often held in the afternoon due to the best lighting (No electricity) ❏ People wore masks to hide identities ❏ Women who attended looked down due to either the thought of being a prostitute or not at home cleaning
Life For an Actor in Elizabethan London Theatre was the form of Television in early modern England. The actors were passionate about what they did. They were very popular. That popularity kept growing The actors where equivalent to today's superstars. Many if the actors where stakeholders and became wealthy men. ❏ Sharers earned more than hired men ❏ The company made much more in England then in the country, so they could pay actors higher wages ❏ Only men were allowed to act up until the 1660, so they would hire young males to play the female roles. ❏ The white powder used on male actors contained lead poisoning, many had horrible skin diseases and some died of lead poisoning ❏ ❏ ❏
