REGION • The Yurok lived in California along the Klamath River. • The region has hills, forest and mountains and is east of the Pacific Ocean. • The weather is cool, wet all year round. • They grow tomatoes, cabbage and carrots and apples during the spring. • The tribe is working to preserve their language, and protect their natural resources.
FOOD • The tribe would eat fruits, deer, and salmon. • They gathered there food by farming, fishing and hunting. • In the fall they hunted the migrating salmon while in the spring they grew crops like tomatoes, cabbage and carrots. • The overall diet of the Yurok tribe was healthy because they had all the necessary parts for a healthy diet except milk.
CLOTHING • The typical clothing of the tribe would be furs, leather, and sticks. • During the season the clothing attire would change. In the spring and summer months, the people would wear leathers and sticks. • During the Fall and winter months the people would wear Hyde's and fur. • In special ceremonies the tribe would wear feathers from eagles and flowers and deer skin.
SHELTER • The people lived in homes called “redwood houses” • The houses were permanent and stayed the same throughout the year.
CULTURE • The tribe believed they floated on water and that the great deer in the sky was their god. • They used the “Brush Dance” for healing. • The Jump dance and white deerskin dance was used for world renewal. • Only men danced and sang the songs.
EUROPEAN INTERACTION • The first experience with Europeans included the relocation of the whole tribe to a settlement called Klamath. • Some of the good things that the tribe had when the Europeans came is they taught the Europeans how to farm and fish during the different seasons. • Some of the negatives that happened is the death of a lot of Natives from diseases from the Europeans. • Some of the big impacts the Yurok had on American history is recently working with the government to fix the salmon migration problem.
YUROK TRIBE TODAY • The Yurok tribe is working to conserve their language and natural resources and removing dams. • The Yurok tribe wear normal clothes except for when they do their rituals like the jumping dance and the white deer skin dance. • They live in normal houses like you and me.
