Common Types of Aid: Scholarships “Gift aid” meaning they usually do not need repaid Most scholarships are based on academic merit Students are automatically reviewed for institutional scholarships based on GPA and test scores. Tips on Applying for External (Private) Scholarships Keep applying for scholarships throughout your college journey, not just for freshman year! Apply early, often, and for everything! Don’t skip the “small” stuff. Beware of scams (requesting Social Security Number, fees for services, guarantees to win) When using a search engine, narrow it down by searching for your major, hobbies, interests, location, heritage, high school and upcoming college enrollment levels (i. e. junior, senior, freshman). financialaid. wvu. edu/home/scholarships/external *Information subject to change.
