The Prophet (S. A. W) and the Quran Since the Quran wasn’t revealed all

The Prophet (S. A. W) and the Quran Since the Quran wasn’t revealed all at once it wasn’t possible to preserve it in a book form. So during the early stage of Islam, major emphasis was laid on memory as a means of preserving the Quran. When wahi first came down to the Prophet (S. A. W) via Jibra’eel (AS), the Prophet (S. A. W) would repeat the words after Jibra’eel (AS) instantly so that they would be memorised well enough However Allah directed to Nabi (SAW) through Surah Qiyamah that He had blessed Nabi (SAW) with such a memory, that he will be unable to forget the words of the Wahy. Once Wahy was revealed, it would be committed to Nabi (SAW)’s memory the next instant The blessed chest of the Prophet (SAW) was the most protected vault of the noble Quran in which there were no chance of mistake, editing or alteration. The Prophet (SAW) would recite the Quran to Angel Jibra’eel every year in the month of Ramadan. In his last year, he recited it twice.

From Nabi (SAW) to the Sahabas (RA) The Sahabas had a great desire to learn and memorise the Quran, such that every one of them were anxious to get ahead of the other. Hundreds of Sahabas had left everything and devoted their lives to learn the Quran. Not only did they memorise the Quran, but they repeated it in their nightly prayers. When someone migrated from Makkah to Madinah, they would teach what they had memorise to the Ansaar (the helpers in Madinah) Some of the Sahabas that memorised all the Quran by heart are: Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Uthman, Hazrat Ali, Abu Hurayrah R. A, Hazrat Aysha, Hazrat Hafsah etc.

The angels witnessed his recitation Usaid bin Hudair R. A. narrated: That while he was reciting Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow) at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled. When he stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again. Then he stopped reciting and the horse became quiet too. He started reciting again and the horse was startled and troubled once again. Then he stopped reciting and his son, Yahya was beside the horse. He was afraid that the horse might trample on him. When he took the boy away and looked towards the sky, he could not see it. The next morning he informed the Prophet who said, "Recite, O Ibn Hudair!" Ibn Hudair replied, "O Allah's Apostle! My son, Yahya was near the horse and I was afraid that it might trample on him, so I looked towards the sky, and went to him. Then I looked at the sky, I saw something like a cloud containing what looked like lamps, so I went out in order not to see it. " The Prophet said, "Do you know what that was? " Ibn Hudair replied, "No. " The Prophet said, "Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared. ” (Bukhari)

The writing of Wahy The people of Arabia were blessed with having good memory,

The writing of Wahy The people of Arabia were blessed with having good memory, and not many people could read or write, so instead they memorised the Quran. However, the Prophet S. A. W made arrangements for the Quran to be written. One Sahaba who was tasked with writing the Wahy was Hazrat Zayd bin Thabit R. A. (there were also many more). Sayyidina Zayd bin Thabit R. A. said: “I use to write down the words of Wahi for him. When wahi came to him he felt burning with heat and the drops of perspiration would start rolling down on his body like pearls. When this state would go away from him, I would present myself before him with a shoulder bone or a piece of something else. He would go on dictating I would go on writing. When I would be finished with writing, the sheer weight of copying the Quran would give me the feeling that my leg is going to break and I would never be able to walk. In any case, when I would be finished with writing, he would say “Read”. I would read it back to him. If there was a shortcoming he would have it corrected and then let it be known to the people. ” (Tabrani)

The compilation of Surahs Sayyidna 'Uthman R. A. says that it was the blessed practice of the Holy Prophet (SAW) that he, soon after the revelation of a certain portion of the Qur’an, would pointedly instruct the scribe of the Wahy to write it in such Surah after such and such verse

The writing of Wahi Since paper was not available in Arabia in those days

The writing of Wahi Since paper was not available in Arabia in those days , many of the Quranic verses were written on stone slabs, parchments. date branches, animal bones, etc. At the time of the Prophet (S. A. W), there was a copy of the Quran, however it was not a formally prepared book, but rather it was a form of various units of writing material. Some Sahabas would make copies of the Quranic verses and keep it for personal recollection. (Ma’ariful Quran)
