An Early Interest in Flight The Wright Brothers stated later in life that their interest in flight first began with a toy helicopter they were given by their father in 1878. The toy was made of cork, paper, and bamboo and used a rubber band to twirl the blades. The toy was based on a design by a French inventor named Alphonse Pénaud.
