There were 100 s of thriving Native American Indian Nations before the Europeans had arrived. Each nation had/has its own tradition of literature that was passed down verbally. Families kept the tradition of story telling continuing generation after generation These stories were most often called Myths and they represent an important part of Native American spiritual beliefs. Ceremonies were/are also places were traditional stories were/are told.
MYTH – a story told verbally MYTHS RELY ON THE SUPERNATUAL The supernatural is used to explain a natural phenomenon, human behavior, or a mystery that is/was, at the time, unexplainable. MYTHS EXPLAIN WHY THE WORLD IS THE WAY IT IS Myths help make sense of a world people did not understand. For example: How did the stars get in the sky? Why are the mountains so tall? Where did people go when they died?
The Purposes of the Creation Myth To explain the workings of the natural world To support and validate social customs To guide people through the trials of living To instill a sense of the mystery of the universe To attempt to explain those mysteries

Some Native American Indian traditions believe that each individual is connected with nine different animals, people or spirits that will accompany each person through life and act as guides in their life. Different animal guides come in and out of their lives depending on the direction that they are headed and the tasks that need to be completed along their journey. Some Native American Totem Poles are created to depict the nine guides in an individuals life. Assignment: You are to design your own totem. You will choose 4 symbols that you feel would help “guide” you in your life. You will explain why you chose each symbol. For example: if you know you are going to need courage to open your own cupcake store one day, you might use a lion.
