O God, your Word is a lantern to our feet, All and a light to our path.

Jesus, our Lord, is the eternal Word, All through whom all things came into being.

He is the Word made flesh who dwelt among us, All full of grace and truth.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit: All Blessed be God for ever!

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.

All As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen.

PSALM (Good News Version) Psalm 111

Praise the LORD! With all my heart I will thank the LORD in the assembly of his people. 2 How wonderful are things the LORD does! All who are delighted with them want to understand them.

All he does is full of honour and majesty; his righteousness is eternal. 4 The LORD does not let us forget his wonderful actions; he is kind and merciful. 3

He provides food for those who honour him; he never forgets his covenant. 6 He has shown his power to his people by giving them the lands of foreigners. 5

In all he does he is faithful and just; all his commands are dependable. 8 They last for all time; they were given in truth and righteousness. 7

He set his people free and made an eternal covenant with them. Holy and mighty is he! 9

The way to become wise is to honour the LORD; he gives sound judgment to all who obey his commands. He is to be praised forever. 10

CANTICLE Luke 1. 68 -79 (Good News Version) Christ opens to us his living word, and stand among us in his risen power.

“Let us praise the Lord, the God of Israel! He has come to the help of his people and has set them free. He has provided for us a mighty Saviour, a descendant of his servant David.

He promised through his holy prophets long ago that he would save us from our enemies, from the power of all those who hate us.

He said he would show mercy to our ancestors and remember his sacred covenant.

With a solemn oath to our ancestor Abraham he promised to rescue us from our enemies and allow us to serve him without fear, so that we might be holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.

You, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his road for him, to tell his people that they will be saved by having their sins forgiven.

Our God is merciful and tender. He will cause the bright dawn of salvation to rise on us and to shine from heaven on all those who live in the dark shadow of death, to guide our steps into the path of peace.

For your people, that we may be grateful every day for the gift of your Word, listen to it and allow it into our hearts to be transformed and act on it.

All Almighty God we thank you for the gift of your holy word. May it be a lantern to our feet, a light upon our paths, and a strength to our lives. Take us and use us to love and serve all people in the power of the Holy Spirit and in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER As our Saviour taught us, so we pray with confidence:
