The Wonderful world of Memory Making Remembering Easier Do. H!

3 Memory Improvement Techniques l The 3 examples of improving your memory are: Narrative Stories l Mnemonics l Keywords (Filling in the blanks) l

How do you use them? Well that is what me and my colleague are going to explain!

Multi-Store Model (MSM) l l Atkinson & Shiffrin (1968) created the MSM. Their model suggests that memory consists of 3 stores: Sensory Store Short – term store (STM) Long– term store (LTM)

How can I remember the MSM Model? One good way of remembering the order of the MSM Model is by a Narrative Story for e. g. your story could be something like this:

The Date I knew this guy called Dalton who went out with a Multi - Store Model. On the 1 st date they went to a Sensory Store it smelt amazing. On the 2 nd date they visited a hotel but it was only for a Short Term. They enjoyed it so much, they kept going until they decided to book it for a Long Term stay.

Working Memory Model (WMM) l l Baddeley & Hitch developed the WMM (1974) Their model proposed that STM is made up of several different stores. Rehearsal Articulatory Phonological loop Central Executive Visuo – Spatial Sketchpad Rehearsal Too much to take in? . . . We thought so

Mnemonics is a great way of learning and memorising something’s order. This is how it could be applied to the WMM: Rehearsal Articulatory Phonological loop Central Executive Visuo – Spatial Sketchpad Rehearsal Always Phoning Lou Creating Excitement Very Spacious Swimming Pool

Cognitive Interview l Geiselman et al (1986) studied the effect of the Cognitive Interview l The Cognitive interview tries to increase the accuracy of witnesses’ recall of events during police questioning. Filling in the Blanks When trying to remember anything important it’s always good to try and note down the keywords. Something similar like this:

Here’s what basically happens in Cognitive interviews: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. RELAXED The interviewer tries to make the witness ______ CONTEXT of the original ______. INCIDENT Recreate the _____ EVERY detail as clearly as they can about The witness reports ____ the crime. The witness recalls events in different _____. ORDERS The witness is asked to recall the event from various different PERSPECTIVES WITNESSES _________ e. g. from the eyes of other ______. ORDERS, WITNESSES, INCIDENT, PERSPECTIVES, RELAXED, CONTEXT, EVERY
