THE WEATHER • Any discussion of English conversation, like any English conversation, must begin with The Weather. • «When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather»
The Reciprocity Rule (правило взаимности) … and 'Nice day, isn't it? ' is not a real question about the weather.
The Context Rule (правило контекста) • Weather-speak can be used: • as a simple greeting • as an ice-breaker leading to conversation on other matters • as a 'default', 'filler' or 'displacement' subject, when conversation on other matters falters, and there is an awkward or uncomfortable lull.
The Agreement Rule (правило согласия) • 'You must never contradict anybody when discussing the weather'.
The Weather Hierarchy Rule (правило иерархии типов погоды) • there is an unofficial English weather hierarchy to which almost everyone subscribes: • sunny and warm/mild (мягкая) • sunny and cool/cold (холодная) • cloudy and warm/mild (мягкая) • cloudy and cool/cold (холодная) • rainy and warm/mild (мягкая) • rainy and cool/cold (холодная)
Snow and the Moderation Rule (снег и правило умеренности) moderation rule': too much snow, like too much of anything, is to be deplored
The Weather-as-family Rule (погода как член семьи) While we may spend much of our time moaning about our weather, foreigners are not allowed to criticize it.
The Shipping Forecast Ritual (Ритуал прослушивания прогноза погоды для судоходства) «We joke about everything, even, especially, the things that are most sacred to us. Like our Weather, and our Shipping Forecast» Kate Fox
