What is a Rip? A rip is a strong current (flow) of water running out to sea. A rip can be very dangerous. It can pull you out to sea very quickly. Rip currents can be hard to see. You can look out for these clues: • Murky brown water – sandy water that has been stirred up off the bottom. • A different surface on the water - smooth or smaller waves that are surrounded by larger waves. • Debris, rubbish or foam floating out to sea. • A rippled look on the water.
