What are we learning today? ● Today you will learn about… ○ What kinds of waste or trash humans produce ○ How it impacts you and the planet ○ What you can do to help
What is the problem with waste? Let's think about this…
How much trash do we produce? In average a person in the US throws away 2000 lbs of trash a year NYC produces 33 Million Tons a year 26, 000 Tons per DAY!!!! Each person 750 lbs a year avg
What type of waste do we produce at home? Food Waste Electronic waste Plastic containers Paper and Cardboard
So… where does all that waste go? … most of it ends up in landfills
Why should you care?
What are the Impacts of our Trash? 90% of our trash is taken to landfills out of state to: ○ New Jersey ○ Pennsylvania ○ Virginia ○ Ohio ○ South Carolina ● Our trash is ending up in other communities around the country
Ok… so what can you do about it? … you can use the 3 RRR´s
What does RRR stand for? ★ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ★ We can limit the amount of trash in our landfills!
Reduce ★ Stop waste before it happens! ★ How can we do this? ○ Buy products with less packaging ○ Use less stuff! ○ Say “no bag, please” and bring your own ○ Use a reusable water bottle
Reuse ★ Use things more than once ★ How can we do this? ○ Donate old clothes, toys, and other items ○ Use plastic bags over again ○ Make items into something else!
Recycle ★ Breaking down products and turning them into something new and different! ★ How can we do this? ○ Put your cans, bottles, paper, and other items into recycling bins ○ Use recycled items!
What can we recycle?
Where does our recycling go?
