GAINING ALLIES • The enemy of my enemy is my friend. • Many countries sympathize with the Americans and offer assistance. • Enemies of the British

BERNARDO DE GALVEZ • Spanish Governor of Louisiana • Raised an army and sided with the colonies. • Forced British from Baton Rouge • Mississippi River is extremely important for movement of troops and equipment.
VALLEY FORGE • Outside of Philadephia • • Harsh Winter Washington had a difficult time keeping army together • Little food, water, shelter, clothing for soldiers.
DESERT • Due to the terrible conditions at Valley Forge, many soldiers quit the army without permission. • This is known as deserting the military. • Officers also resigned, leaving the army in desperate times.
MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE • French Noblemen (Royalty) • Saw the value of the American Revolution as a symbol of mankind’s need for independence and liberty. • Became a close aide to Washington
FRIEDRICH VON STEUBEN • Prussian General (Germany) • Helped drill the American Army and organized them into a real fighting force. • Good training for the upcoming battles in the spring. • PROFESSIONAL ARMY
JUAN DE MIRALLES • Helped fund the Americans • Desperately needed money to fund war, keep troops.
MONEY PROBLEMS • The Continental Congress had no right to tax citizens of the United States. • Due to problems in the past with taxation. • Congress began printing money in huge amounts
INFLATION • When money is printed in large amounts and becomes worthless. • Money is usually backed by gold, without the gold backing, it’s just fancy paper. • This child from Zimbabwe does not have nearly as much money as you think.
WOMEN’S ROLES While war is being fought, many women are beginning to see their roles changing. • Judith Sargeant Murray seen here argued that women’s minds were as good as men. • Not believed at the time to be true.
