The Victorian Seaside
Why did the Victorians go on holiday? People thought the air was clean and refreshing beside the sea. Railways were being built right around Britain during the Victorian era. This meant that people could now travel more quickly and cheaply.
Sea Bathing During the Victorian period, bathing in the sea was believed to be good for you. The Victorian people were very modest and were fully clothed at all times. To overcome this, some beaches were divided up so that men went to one beach and women to another.
Bathing Machines Victorians used bathing machines, like the one you see here, to get changed in. They would then be led by horse into the water where they could lower themselves into the sea without being seen.

Issues on Holiday All the family have colds, except the under-nurse, who has a face ache. Poor materfamilias, who originated the trip, is in despair at all the money spent for nothing, and gives way to tears. Paterfamilias endeavors to console her with the reflection that “he knew how it would be, but that, after all, St. John’s Wood, where they live, is such a healthy place that, with care and doctoring, they will soon be nearly as well as they had never left it!”

Activity 1 Write a postcard about your seaside holiday. Are you having a good time? What have you been doing? What have you seen? You can write your postcard from the perspective of a rich Victorian person or a poor Victorian person. Once you have finished writing your postcard, you can create a picture to go on the front.
Activity 2 Create a fact page about Victorian holidays to educate younger children. Remember to add a mixture of pictures and text. Start with a bold title and use subheadings to split the text up. Make it look inviting.
Activity 3 Compare and contrast holidays now with holidays in Victorian times. You could make two lists or create a venn diagram. Victorian Holidays Modern Holidays
