The Verb • A verb is a word used to express action or a state of being. • Examples: • James Fenimore Cooper wrote The Last of the Mohicans. • Doug seems awfully happy today. • Note: Every sentence must have a verb. The verb says something about the subject.
Action Verbs • An action verb may express physical action or mental action. • Physical Action – jump, shout, search, carry, run Langston Hughes wrote volumes of poetry. A distinguished cinematographer, James Wong Howe, filmed the movie.
Action Verbs • Mental Action – worry, think, believe, imagine, remember • The scientist studied the ant colony. • Mario knew the answer to every question on the test.
Linking Verbs • A linking verb links, or connects, the subject with a noun, a pronoun, or an adjective in the predicate. • View the following examples:

Linking Verbs • Note: Whether a verb is used to link words or to express action depends on its meaning in a sentence. • Linking-The tiger looked tame. • Action-The tiger looked for something to eat. • Linking-The soup tasted good. • Action-I tasted the soup. • Linking-She grew tired of playing • Action-She grew into a fine woman.
Helping Verbs • A helping verb (auxiliary verb) helps the main verb to express an action or a state of being. • Examples- could be may have asked might have been caught
