Farmland Conservation Rich Soil. . . Strong Roots The Connecticut River Valley has some of the richest farmland in the world. But development pressure puts our farms at risk. Since 1985, UVLT has been working with Upper Valley farmers to protect agricultural resources. Today, we hold conservation agreements on more than 60 working farms and thousands of acres of prime farmland. Approximately 40% of the projects UVLT has done to date have included some type of farmland.

Farmland Conservation with NRCS In 2000, UVLT became the first land trust in the nation to be awarded a Federal Farm Protection Program (FPP) grant to protect farmland in Lyme. In the past 16 years UVLT has conserved 49 farms with NRCS. 20 in New Hampshire for 1, 800+ acres. 29 in Vermont 3, 500+ acres. Current NRCS funding awards include 3 farms in NH and 1 in VT.

Farmland Conservation Although UVLT is not in the business of farming, our successful efforts to conserve numerous farms on both sides of the Connecticut River have had a significant impact on maintaining the health and viability of these lands for the future. Regardless of the direction agriculture takes, once protected, these highly productive farm lands will always be available to feed the local community. We believe that investment in farmland conservation today will pay off in the future.
