Review • The whole profile of the Messiah was in the OT, but the individual pieces never occur together to form the full picture in one passage • Messiah = mashiach (Heb. ) christos (Gr. ) the Heb. = “anointed one” • Many people were anointed in the OT incl. priests, prophets & kings • Heiser stresses that there is no OT verse that speaks of a dying and rising mashiach and that is right in the sense that no verse explicitly says that the mashiach will die and rise • So, why did Jesus say he must die? (Mk. 8, 9, 10, Passion Predictions) • Why does he think that he must do this?

Ch. 31 Who Will Go For Us? • We are ¾ of the way through the Bible & here is he is for the first time! • Or is it? • We have seen Jesus all through the OT • The whole Bible is about Jesus

Isaiah in the Divine Council • Isaiah is admitted to a meeting of the Divine Council (Isa. 40) • He hears the commands (which are to the group, plural) “Comfort, comfort, Speak, Cry” (1 -2) • Remember Ch. 6? “Whom shall I send? ” • “A voice says “Cry!” – “And I said, what shall I cry? ” (6 -8) • “Behold your God!” (9)

Jesus as the One Who Will Lead a New Exodus • John the Baptist

Jesus as the One Who Will Lead a New Exodus • John the Baptist appears saying “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the LORD” (Jn. 1: 1923) – he is identifying himself with Isaiah (23) • Then Jesus comes to be baptized (1: 29 -34) • In Mk. 1: 9 -11 it says that the heavens were “torn open” or “split apart” = Gr. schizo, the word used to describe the parting of the Red Sea in Ex. 14: 21 • Isa. 40 uses exodus language – so does John & Mark • Jude has Jesus leading the people out of Egypt (5)

Jesus is the Name • Jesus as the Name (=Hashem) (Jn. 17: 5 -6,

Jesus is the Name • Jesus as the Name (=Hashem) (Jn. 17: 5 -6, 11 -12, 25 -26) • The Angel of the LORD “My Name is in him” (Ex. 23: 20 -23) • Rom. 10: 9 -13 “the name of the Lord” citing Joel 2: 32 • Jesus led the people out of Egypt - Jude 5 • He is the Angel of the LORD (Jdg. 2: 1 -2)

The Baptism of Jesus • Mk. 1: 11 “this is my beloved Son” •

The Baptism of Jesus • Mk. 1: 11 “this is my beloved Son” • 2 Sam. 12: 24 -25 “Jedidiah” = beloved • This is a title for Solomon, a son of David & a type of Christ • It signifies that Jesus is the heir to the throne of David, the Messiah promised in 2 Sam. 7 • It has been a long time since the destruction of Jerusalem but finally the Messiah has come • He will redeem his people from slavery & lead a New Exodus

Ch. 32 Preeminent Domain • The first exodus was the deliverance of Israel, the

Ch. 32 Preeminent Domain • The first exodus was the deliverance of Israel, the people of God that God chose after handing the other nations over to the gods of the nations (Dt. 32: 8 -9) • But now, the time has come for the LORD to reclaim the nations from the false gods • He is, after all, the LORD of the whole earth • So after his baptism, Jesus goes out into the wilderness

The Wilderness Temptation • The wilderness was associated with the demonic; no surprise that

The Wilderness Temptation • The wilderness was associated with the demonic; no surprise that Jesus would meet the Devil on unholy ground • In the Day of Atonement ritual in Lev. 16 has 2 goats, one for Azazel – driven out into the wilderness • Why would the Spirit drive Jesus out into the desert to face the Devil? - To conquer it of course! • Jesus quotes from Dt. 6 -8, the part of Deut. where Moses reminds them of the wilderness years & how they were tempted by demonic forces & failed • The Temptations: hunger (manna & quail), protection & obedience, world rule offered

The Holy War Begins • Right after his temptation, Jesus moves out of Nazareth

The Holy War Begins • Right after his temptation, Jesus moves out of Nazareth & goes to Capernaum (Mk. 4: 12 -16) & begins his ministry • “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near” (Mt. 4: 17) • He begins by (1) calling his first disciples & (2) healing a demonpossessed man (Mk. 1: 16 -28. • The holy war for the kingdom of God is on • This is the first time in the Bible we read of a demon being cast out of a person • This is the beginning of the defeat of the Elohim

The Gates of Hell • Jesus sends out 70 disciples (the number of the

The Gates of Hell • Jesus sends out 70 disciples (the number of the nations at Babel) (Lk. 10: 17) & when they return Jesus says “I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven” (Lk. 10: 18) • The whole of Jesus’s ministry is spiritual war • He goes to Caesarea Philippi (Banias) & elicits the confession of faith from Peter (Mt. 16: 13 -20)

Baiting the Enemy • Mount Hermon is the source of evil in the OT

Baiting the Enemy • Mount Hermon is the source of evil in the OT • Ruins of over 20 temples have been found there • In the Book of Enoch it is the place where the Watcher Gods fell when they rebelled against God & were cast out of heaven & where they established their ”Eden” • The next event after Caesarea Philippi was the Transfiguration (Mk. 9: 2 -8 “My beloved Son”) • Mt. of Transfiguration – Lk. 9: 30 “departure” = exodus in Gr. • It is as if Jesus wants them to hear & see him as he declares that he is here to take back what belongs to God
