Japanese Empire is Expanding • After Peral Harbor, Japan begins expanding further into the Pacific • The Japanese military: • Attacked American airfields in the Philippines • Captured American outposts of Guam and Wake Island • Conquered the oil-rich Dutch East Indies • Wanted to attack Australia and New Zealand next
America Begins to Strike Back • By spring of 1942, U. S. forces were ready to strike back • April 18 th, sixteen B-25 Bombers commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle launched a bombing raid on Tokyo • May 7 th, The Battle of the Coral Sea is won by America to stop Japanese aggression near Australia
Battle of Midway • June 3 rd – 6 th – American planes sink: four Japanese carriers one heavy cruiser two destroyers • The American Armada only loses one carrier and destroyer • This battle is the turning point of the war in the Pacific • After this battle, America rarely loses in the Pacific https: //www. yout ube. com/watch? v=N-au 50 Gx. Where to start in Europe? • With the Japanese offensive halted, America turned it’s attention to defeating Germany • Germany at this time has control of Europe and is advancing into the Soviet Union • The big question then was when and where to open a 2 nd front against the Nazis

MU • The strategy targeted the one area where the Allies were having success against the Germans, in North Africa • This strategy is called Operation Torch and was lead by General Patton • In November 1942, the U. S. lands it’s 350, 000 troops in North Africa • They sweep through Africa and in May 1943, end the war in North Africa with 350, 000 German and Italian casualties
Taking the War to Italy • With Africa in Allied control, they could focus their efforts on Italy • July 1943 – A combined US and British amphibious operation, the largest in history, landed 160, 000 troops in Sicily • Amphibious Operation – Sea to land attack • Italy withdrew from Sicily quickly to the Italian mainland
Italy Surrenders • After Sicily fell, the Fascist Grand Council expelled Mussolini from power • Almost immediately after the Allies invaded the Italian mainland, Italy surrendered • The Germans rushed in 25 divisions into Italy to hold this front. This stalled the Allied invasion. • They would fight on this front for the remainder of the war.
