Where to start in Europe? • With the Japanese offensive halted, America turned it’s attention to defeating Germany • Germany at this time has control of Europe and is advancing into the Soviet Union • The big question then was when and where to open a 2 nd front against the Nazis

MU • The strategy targeted the one area where the Allies were having success against the Germans, in North Africa • This strategy is called Operation Torch and was lead by General Patton • In November 1942, the U. S. lands it’s 350, 000 troops in North Africa • They sweep through Africa and in May 1943, end the war in North Africa with 350, 000 German and Italian casualties

Taking the War to Italy • With Africa in Allied control, they could focus their efforts on Italy • July 1943 – A combined US and British amphibious operation, the largest in history, landed 160, 000 troops in Sicily • Amphibious Operation – Sea to land attack • Italy withdrew from Sicily quickly to the Italian mainland

Italy Surrenders • After Sicily fell, the Fascist Grand Council expelled Mussolini from power • Almost immediately after the Allies invaded the Italian mainland, Italy surrendered • The Germans rushed in 25 divisions into Italy to hold this front. This stalled the Allied invasion. • They would fight on this front for the remainder of the war.
