+ n n Spanish American War Causes n Monroe Doctrine (Protecting the freedom of Cubans) n Yellow Journalism n USS Maine The War n Commodore George Dewey destroyed most of the Spanish Navy which was in the Philippines n At San Juan Hill Roosevelt lead his Rough Riders to a major victory.
+ Spanish American War n The War (continued) n The war was over in 3 months with few american casualties. n “Splendid little war”
+ Spanish American War n The Results n Cuba became free based on 2 amendments 1. Teller Amendment- US would not annex Cuba 2. Platt Amendment- US would have bases and some authority over Cuba n Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam became territories of the US.
+ Anti-Imperialist League n Funded by Carnegie (the steel tycoon, and Philanthropist) n Shows that many Americans were not in favor of n Manifest Destiny n Social Darwinism n Imperialism
+ Open Door Policy n US wanted to increase trade with countries like China and Japan. n Britain already had strong trade relations with China, and the US did not want to be “shut out” (hence the name Open Door) n Britain’s ties were even stronger after the Opium Wars (which ended in 1860)
+ Boxer Rebellion n Chinese Nationalism rose after the opium wars. n The Nationalist became known as Boxers n They rebelled and killed foreigners, sympathizers, and Christians n The US helped Britain put down the rebellion. n Britain kept its lease on Hong Kong (Rush Hour) while the US kept its open door policy
+ US Shows its might n Roosevelt Sends his Great White Fleet around the world. n US helped the Panamanians overthrow the Columbians, in returned Panama rented the land to the US to build the Panama Canal (This saved two weeks of travel) n Due to the size of our navy, our location, and the Panama Canal the US became one of the worlds strongest military power.
+ Foreign Policy (Copy This!) Roosevelt Taft Wilson Big Stick Diplomacy Dollar Diplomacy Moral Diplomacy Roosevelt’s Corollary. Extends the Monroe Doctrine Increase investment in foreign countries. The US had a moral obligation to spread democracy. Many businesses lost “Speak softly and carry money a big stick” Disliked by people in the countries where Made America seem a investments were threat to some being made European powers He Opposed Imperialism Tested by the rebellion in Haiti and Pancho Villa Raids (this one is important)
