How did this document come about? • Following the terrible events of the Second World War, especially the killings of 6 millions Jews by Hitler and the Nazis, many countries in the world wanted to create document outlining the rights that ALL people should have, wherever they lived in the world. • The document was signed in December 1948 following years of discussion and redrafting. • This document is now the foundation of international human rights law.
