The Two Brothers

This story has been adapted from an ancient Egyptian legend. 2 © Young Citizens

Once there were two brothers. When their father died, they were given the family farm. They grew wheat in the fields and ground the grain to make flour. 3 © Young Citizens

The soil was very poor and dry on the farm. But about once a year, heavy rain would fall in Africa and the great Nile river would flood. The river waters carried a rich mud called silt, which covered the farm and helped the wheat to grow. 4 © Young Citizens

Life was very hard, especially when the Nile river did not flood and there was very little food to eat. But the brothers would always share whatever flour they made from the wheat they grew. 5 © Young Citizens

One day, after the brothers had finished harvesting the younger brother thought to himself… 6 © Young Citizens ‘We always share the flour we make equally but that is not really fair. My brother has a wife and children to feed and I do not. He needs more flour than I do. ’

However, the younger brother knew that his brother would not agree to take more than half. So he came up with a plan. 7 © Young Citizens ‘I’ve got it!’

That night the younger brother went into his barn and counted out six sacks of flour. 8 © Young Citizens

He checked that no one was watching and carried the sacks into his brother’s barn. 9 © Young Citizens

Later that night, the older brother thought to himself. 10 © Young Citizens ‘I am very lucky. I have a wonderful wife and children to go home to each day but my brother has no family. He works so hard and he must be lonely. I believe he deserves more flour than I do. ’

However, the older brother knew that his brother would not agree to take more than half. So as the sun was rising, the older brother took six sacks of flour from his barn, and moved them to his brother’s barn. 11 © Young Citizens

The next morning, both brothers were confused when they found that they had exactly the same number of flour sacks as they had before they gave six away. ? ? ? 12 © Young Citizens ? ? ?

The following night each brother took another secret gift of six flour sacks to their brother’s barn. And again, when they woke the next morning they found that they still had the same amount of flour as they had started with. ? ? ? 13 © Young Citizens ? ? ?

On the third night the brothers once more carried their gifts of flour across the farm to their brother’s barn. As they were about to pass each other, the bright moon lit up their faces and they realised what had been happening. 14 © Young Citizens

Without a word, they ran to each other and hugged. They both realised the love that they had for one another. 15 © Young Citizens
