Beam Gas Vertex Profile Monitoring Secondary Target gas volume (tank) Neon @ 10 E-7 m. Bar HL-LHC proton beam [0. 45 - 6, 5] Te. V Inelastic Interaction (Vertex) Particle Tracking station Secondary Particles Ø A set of few thousands Beam Gas interaction Vertex events allows to measure the HL-LHC beam size within desired accuracy. Ø This is a fully non-invasive method with no visible effects on the beam lifetime. logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 3
LHC Beam Gas Vertex demonstrator • BGV Demonstrator operating in LHC point 4, have been used until the end of 2018 for full characterization and as a test bench for online processing development. Providing promising beam size measurement in real time. • Uses Scintillating Fibers (Sci. Fi) detector technology from the LHCb R&D. logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 4
The HL-LHC BGV instruments Similar design to the BGV prototype with some improvements to allow beam profiles reconstruction. § The gas target : vacuum tank re-design and supersonic gas jet target implementation. § Detector technology: gaseous detectors or silicon sensors foreseen instead of Sci. Fi. § New readout system based on optical fibre links and rad-hard electronics. The BGV project is waiting for the “final go ahead”, it should come soon after the BI review of LHC Beam Profile Measurement systems on 1 st October 2019. logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 5

CERN EN Services to be involved § EN-MME § Vacuum tank design § Detector support and alignments systems § EN-CV Cooling and Ventilation, § Detector and readout chiller cooling system. § Piping with foam from service galleries to instrument § Dry air to avoid ice forming on cooled readout board. § EN-EL for power distribution, cabling, and racks. § GBT fiber pulling and BST timing fibers § Low voltage distribution from service galleries to instrument location (<60 m lenght). § EN-HE § Instrument transport and on PT 4 site during LS 3 § EN-SMM § Survey & alignment of instruments logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 7
Other CERN Services to be involved § BE-CO Control Group § LHC Beam Synchronous Timing System to the new racks § Accelerator login database § (FESA class developed in BI) § BE-ICS § Control of gas, HV, temp sensors, cooling control, etc… § TE-VSC Vacuum group. § Gas target injection/pumping, NEG coating. § IT-CS Communication Systems § Technical network connection to the new racks § EP-DT-DI detectors gas supply (only if we use MPGD) § Gas mixing/recycling system as used in experimental areas. logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 8
Space reservation in Tunnel A space reservation exists in the current HL layout for a BGV on the left (B 2) and right (B 1) side of LSS 4. Ref ECR: LHC-BGV-EC-0002 7 L 4 Beam 2 BGV 7 R 4 Beam 1 BGV logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 9
Space reservation in Service galleries Currently we only have the racks reserved for the left side instrument. § BGV Readout system in BY 14 and BY 13 and part of BY 12 in UA 43 § TE-VSC electronic equipment currently installed in racks VY 04 and VY 20, in UA 43 We need to reserve similar number of racks in UA 47 for the second instrument. § Potential additional racks in the BI “control room” in SX 4 on the surface of Pt 4. logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 10

Status and future needs § We are still at the early HL-BGV design phase ! § Reservation needed at least for the missing readout and vacuum pumps racks on the Right side. § Power supply needs are standards (few k. W) for the VME racks no special equipment with high power consumption (like magnets). § Final location will be dependent on optics functions in Point 4 – a compromise between high beta functions in both H&V and minimum allowed aperture. § In case we go for gaseous detectors technology we need to check if the gas supply will be in UA 43/47 or if we install the mixing system on Pt 4 surface. logo area Robert Kieffer, rkieffer@cern. ch 14
