The Tudors • The Tudors were a royal family who ruled England from 1485 to 1603. • During the Tudor period their were three kings and two queens. • The most famous of these monarchs were King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

Primogeniture • In Britain, the first born son of the ruling King or Queen would become the King upon the monarch’s death. • This is called ‘Primogeniture’. • If they did not have a son, then their daughter would become Queen, but the family of the queen’s husband would become rulers. • However, if the monarch did not have any children they would need to name a heir to the throne.

Primogeniture • It was believed that women were not capable of ruling the country, and that is why kings always wanted to have a son and heir. • However, some kings were so bad at ruling the country that other noble families tried to overthrow them. • These noble families could then argue and fight over who should be king and which family should rule the country. • This is what happened to cause the War of the Roses.

War of the Roses • People believed that King Henry VI was not ruling the country properly. • This led to disagreements between the House of York, represented by the white rose, and House of Lancaster, represented by the red rose. • In 1455 these disagreements led to war, between those loyal to the House of York or Lancaster.

War of the Roses • The war lasted 30 years with both sides putting kings on the throne. • The final battle was at Bosworth Field in 1485 which was won by Henry Tudor of the House of Lancaster. • Henry Tudor married Elizabeth of York and combined the roses to form the Tudor rose and a new family of rule in England.

Henry VII • Henry Tudor became king and known as Henry VII. • Henry VII was the first Tudor king of England Wales. • Although he was a harsh ruler, Henry VII brought peace to the land for the first time in many years. • The Tudors ruled England for 118 years.

Tudor Society • The people of the Tudor period were split into two main groups; Nobles and Commoners. • Nobles were rich, owned most of the land, well educated, and were often friends with the monarch. • Commoners were often poor and had no land or power of their own. Most commoners lived in the countryside and worked on the land.

Loyalty • Loyalty was a central part of Tudor society and means being very supportive of someone. • Both nobles and commoners had to be loyal to the monarch. • However, commoners also had to be loyal to the noble land owner where they lived. • Many commoners worked for the noble land owner, either in their house, or on the land itself. • Anyone who did not show loyalty could be punished, or even sentenced to death.
