Video Time • Today we will be looking at the Tudor family tree. • Watch the video below to remind us of the Tudor kings and queens.
Henry VII • Henry married Elizabeth of York after the War of the Roses to unite the houses of York and Lancaster. • During Henry VII reign, 6 rebellions of noble families tried to remove him from the throne. • A firm ruler, Henry VII managed to bring peace between England, Europe and Scotland. • Henry and Elizabeth had two sons and two daughters. • Arthur died before he could take throne, so young Henry became king instead.
Henry VIII became king after his father died in 1509. He is famous for having six wives during his reign. Henry reformed religion, making England protestant. Although looking fearsome, Henry was known to be a good sportsman, writer and musician. • The need for a male heir dominated Henry’s thoughts. • Henry had two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, and a son, Edward. • •
Edward VI • Henry VIII son Edward became king in 1547 when he was only 9 years old. • Edward VI was clever and well educated. • People felt he would not be a good king, because he was not wise enough to make sensible decisions. • A Regency Council was set up to rule the country until Edward became an adult. • Edward did not marry and had no children. • Edward became very poorly with tuberculosis and died at age 15 in 1553.
Lady Jane Grey • When Edward VI died, the crown was passed after much discussion to Henry’s cousin, Lady Jane Grey. • Jane was the granddaughter of Henry VIII’s sister Mary. • She was married to the son of a lord, and it was felt she would have a good chance of giving birth to a male heir. • However, Jane would only rule for nine days, after Edward’s sister Mary raised an army and threatened to attack London.
Mary I • Mary was England’s first Queen Regent, meaning she gained the title through birth and not marriage. • Mary reinstated the Catholic church in England reversed many other religious changes. • People that did not agree with Mary I’s religious changes were burned at the stake and she was given the nickname ‘Bloody Mary’. • She married Phillip II of Spain to unite the two countries, but this was not popular. • Mary had no children before her death in 1558.
Elizabeth I • After Mary’s death, her sister Elizabeth took the throne. • Elizabeth I created a Church of England that was mainly protestant, but also allowed some Catholic traditions to continue. • The Elizabethan era was seen as a ‘golden age’ for England. • Elizabeth ruled for 45 years, but never married and did not have children. • Elizabeth was the last Tudor monarch
