THE TUDORS Tudor Clothing
Lesson Objectives • To recap who the Tudors were. • To find out what Tudor men and women wore. • To learn that Tudors had rules about what people could wear. • To see how Tudor women dressed. • To compare modern and Tudor clothing.
Recap • The Tudors were a royal family who ruled England from 1485 to 1603. • Henry Tudor became king after the War of the Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster. • The most famous Tudor monarchs were King Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth I. Tudor Rose Henry Tudor Henry VIII Elizabeth I
Tudor Clothing • Clothes worn by the Tudor rich and poor were very different. • Tudor poor people wore plain clothes, often made from cotton or wool and were loose fitting. • Tudor rich would wear clothes made from different materials, and would be decorated with gold and jewels.
Triangle or Square? • Tudor gowns were designed to give women a triangular shape. • Men’s clothing was designed to give them a square shape.
Tudor Women Clothing Hood: There were many styles of hood and the type worn was personal. Corset: These were stiffened with wood to smooth out lumps and bumps. Gown: Kirtle: The coloured main underskirt. This was split at the front to reveal the kirtle.
Tudor Men Clothing Hat: These were sometimes decorated with jewels or feathers. Breeches: These were tied at the knees with laces Shirt: Often tied at the neck and sometimes with a lace collar. Doublet: Tight fitting jacket that was stuffed and then quilted.
Dressing Rules • In the Tudor period there were many rules about who could wear what fabrics and colours. • Only royalty could wear silk, or the colours purple and gold. • No one under the rank of Knight could wear velvet or crimson. • There were also many other rules about who could wear certain furs, and where they were allowed to buy their fabrics from. • Click on the picture to watch a video about dressing King Henry VIII.
Dressing a Lady • Rich Tudor ladies wore many layers of clothes and often needed servants to help dress them. • Click on the picture below to watch a video that shows how a Tudor lady would be dressed.
