The Tri-Fold Brochure
What is a Brochure? • A brochure is a small printed paper piece, usually made from a single sheet. Brochures are typically 8. 5" x 11" or 8. 5" x 14" tri-fold, but they can have different dimensions and numbers of folds. Brochures are often also referred to as pamphlets or leaflets.
Why do Businesses Create Brochures? • • • A brochure can explain your organization's purpose and services. A brochure can answer frequently asked questions about your organization. A brochure can offer more specific instructional how-to or health information. A brochure tells the reader how he or she can find out more about your organization. A brochure can educate people about a specific program or event.
Who might a brochure target? • • A brochure can be directed to a specific group or groups, or it can be made for a broad general audience. Think about the groups that typically are interested in information about your organization as well as groups you'd like to generate more interest from, and consider whether you'd like to have brochures that specifically target each of those groups. Some of the groups you might want to direct a brochure towards include: Potential members or volunteers Potential clients Potential funders Potential community partners and supporters The press The general public
What can you do with brochures? Brochures are an extremely flexible medium for getting information about your organization out to the public or to targeted groups. Here a few of the things you can do with your brochures: • • • Direct mail them to targeted people (mailing lists, people who call your office requesting information, etc. ) Attach them to proposals or reports Leave them behind when visiting clients Leave them at easily accessible locations Insert them into press kits and presentation folders Distribute them in classes and workshops Give them to prospective employees and volunteers Pass them out at meetings, fairs, conferences, seminars If you go to the trouble of making brochures for your group, be sure to have them available at any function where your group is represented.
Things to Consider… • • Use the front cover, or front panel, to your advantage by including an eye-catching photo or graphic. Too many amateur writers use the front cover to showcase their company’s name or logo. How exciting! Not. Instead of using your logo, use a photo that showcases your bestselling product(s) or people enjoying your products or services. Along with this great photo, be sure to include text that speaks directly to the reader. Ask a question or state a benefit that most people want. In other words, give readers “an offer they can’t refuse. ”
Keep your target audience in mind: • • • You need to think about what will catch the attention of your target audience? Studies suggest that people decide within seven seconds whether they want to read the brochure or to throw it away. Therefore, you have only seven seconds to arrest their attention. Your brochure design should be attractive enough to do its job in seven seconds. Obviously, if your audience is medical professionals your brochure will have a whole different look and feel from the brochure if your target audience is young mothers.
Things to Consider… Deliver your message with style: • You should consider delivering your message with a style. Nobody would want to read a brochure that looks mundane and boring. • Bring some innovation and style to the way you communicate with your target audience.
Things to Consider… Effective use of colors: • Simple black and white brochures are not going to catch the eyes of your audience. Use appropriate colors depending on your product and your target audience. • • If your audience is youthful, use bright, vibrant colors to put emphasis on the trendiness of your brochure. These colors will catch the young person’s eye. If your audience is sophisticated, use colors very judiciously. For example a contrast of white and grey colors can be used to give a look of an artist’s work. Use texture to add uniqueness and elegance: The texture of your brochure is important. It will add uniqueness and elegance to your brochure. Therefore you should carefully choose the texture of your brochure.
Things to Consider… Use of shapes and photos: • The use of unusual shapes and photos on your brochure will attract the attention of your audience. • For example, an entertainment park used brochures that had big bites taken out of the sides of it to emphasize fun that is good enough to be eaten. Some brochures use die-cuts.
Project Overview • For this project you will obtain an actual client. That term is used loosely because the "client" will have no impact on your design at all. You simply need a real company so you can: • 1. Have a real target audience established 2. You can take photos of their establishment as needed. In the end you should have a product that you can pitch to the company and perhaps sell them your design. Regardless, you will have a unique design for your portfolio that will not have the same look or content as your fellow classmates. •
