I can… • Summarise the views of the ‘Big Three’ at Versailles
• Germany had surrendered on 11/11/1918 • The countries that were in the war needed to reach a peace agreement • Leaders from 32 countries met in Versailles, near Paris in January 1919 to talk about peace
• Nobody from Germany was allowed to attend • The Three most important people at the conference were known as the ‘BIG THREE’ WOODROW WILSON DAVID LLOYD GEORGES CLEMENCEAU
• David Lloyd George didn’t want Germany to be treated too badly • He thought this would lead to another war • Most British people wanted the Germans dealt with very harshly • He had to think of his people
• Woodrow Wilson did not want to damage Germany too much • He made up ‘fourteen points’ which he thought countries could stick to in order to make peace • He also wanted to set up a ‘League of Nations’ which countries would join so that they would not go to war again
• Georges Clemenceau wanted to totally destroy Germany • Remember Germany and France were old enemies! • He wanted Germany to lose all their power • He also wanted Alsace and Lorraine back • He wanted Germany to pay for all the damage they had caused
