What is the Trail of Tears? ! The “Trail of Tears” is specifically about the removal of the Cherokees in the first half of the 19 th century, when about 16, 000 Cherokees were forcibly relocated from their ancestral lands in Georgia to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) west of the Mississippi. It is estimated that of the 16, 000 Cherokee who were removed, about 4, 000 perished. The Indians walked over 1, 200 miles to get to their new territory, and went through 9 different states.
Why did they have to leave? White Americans, mainly the ones who lived on the western frontier, feared and resented the Native Americans they came in contact with: To them American Indians seemed like alien people who took up the land that the white Americans wanted and thought they deserved. President George Washington, and other officials during his time, thought that the best way to fix this problem was to make the Native Americans “civilized”. They wanted to make the Native Americans act and do things the was they do, and five tribes decided to do so, they were called the “Five Civilized Tribes. ”
