THE TISSUE LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION TISSUE a group
- Slides: 23
• THE TISSUE LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION • • • TISSUE — a group of similar cells performing a common function • • 4 MAJOR TYPES : • • 1. EPITHELIAL TISSUES — tissues which cover or line the body’s internal/internal surfaces • • 2. CONNECTIVE TISSUES — support, protect, bind together the other tissue types • • 3. MUSCLE TISSUE — consists of specialized cells (muscle fibers) capable of shortening in length (contraction) and thus producing movement. • • 4. NERVOUS TISSUE — consists of specialized cells (neurons) capable of generating and transmitting electrochemical signals (impulses) and thus coordinating the functions of the other tissue types.
Nerve Brain & Spinal Cord Nerve Impulse Conduction
Skeletal Muscle Attached to Skeleton Movement, stabilize position of skeleton
Smooth Muscle Walls of blood vessels, internal organs Movement of food, urine, secretions and regulate blood vessel diameter
Cardiac Muscle Heart Circulates blood and maintains blood pressure
Simple Inner surface of trachea, respirator tract and intestines Columnar Diffusion, absorption and secretion
Simple Cuboidal Kidney tubules Diffusion, absorption and secretion
Simple Capillaries, air sacs (alveoli) and Bowman’s capsule Diffusion, absorption and secretion Squamous
Stratified Squamous Skin Protection against abrasion, pathogens and chemical attack
Stratified Cuboidal Sweat gland ducts, urethra, pharynx and conjunctiva Protection and secretion
Stratified Columnar Mucous membranes and large excretory ducts of glands Protection and secretion
Ciliated Pseudostratified Columnar Trachea and bronchi Protection and secretion
Transitional Bladder Stretch
Adipose Deep to skin, around organs Padding, cushion, insulation and energy storage
Dense Fibrouse Tendons, Ligaments and covers muscles (Fascia) Attachment and support
Elastic Lung, wall of artery, trachea, bronchial tubes, vocal cords (Larynx) Stretching
Reticular Liver, kidney, spleen, lymph node and bone marrow Supporting framework (stroma)
Deep to dermis, between muscles, around blood vessels , joints and nerves Areolar (adult) Cushion organs and provides support
Hyaline End of Long bones, Ribs, sternum, trachea, bronchi and nasal septum Support and reduce friction
Elastic Cartilage External ear and epiglottis Support
Fibrocartilage Intervertebral disk Support
Bone Skeleton Structure, support, mineral storage
Blood Circulatory System Defense and transport
