The Three Contingency Model of Performance Management Prepared by Andreja Bratinscak and Dick Malott
The Problem • How do we diagram PM contingencies, • when you want the behavior to occur repeatedly?
Little Al Poling Gets UP
Getting up on time Ineffective Natural Contingency SD/Deadline: In a few minutes. Before Behavior Will lose a few minutes of time to do homework Al gets out of bed After Will not lose a few minutes of time to do homework
Performance Management Contingency SD/Deadline: In a few minutes Before Behavior Mother will toss a pitcher of cold water on Al and stand there and laugh Al gets out of bed After Mother will not toss a pitcher of cold water on Al and stand there and laugh
Inferred Theoretical contingency Before Fear of Mom tossing a pitcher of cold water and laughing Behavior After Al gets out of bed No fear of mom tossing a pitcher of cold water and laughing
Hypothetical Little Al #1 Mrs. Poling uses delayed outcome.
Same Ineffective Natural Contingency SD/Deadline: In a few minutes Before Behavior Will lose a few minutes of time to do homework Al gets out of bed After Will not lose a few minutes of time to do homework
Performance Management Contingency SD/Deadline: In a few minutes. Before Behavior Will lose $1 on Saturday Al gets out of bed After Will not lose $1 on Saturday
Inferred Theoretical Contingency Before Fear of loss of $1 on Saturday Behavior After Al gets out of bed No fear of loss of $1 on Saturday
Hypothetical Little Al #2 Mama Poling gets real.
Once Again, the Same Ineffective Natural Contingency SD/Deadline: In a few minutes Before Behavior Will lose a few minutes of time to do homework Al gets out of bed After Will not lose a few minutes of time to do homework
Hypothetical Little Al #2 Mrs. Poling uses delayed outcome over Little Al’s entire school week.
Performance Management Contingency for Monday SD/Deadline: In 1 minute (7: 01 AM Monday) After Before Behavior Will lose $5 on Saturday Al gets out of bed Will not lose $5 on Saturday
Hypothetical Little Al #2 Mrs. Poling uses delayed outcome over Little Al’s entire school week. That’s cool for Monday, but what about the rest of the days? We might do a separate diagram for each day, but here’s a slightly cooler way.
ANALOG TO HOMOGENIOUS RESPONSE SEQUENCE SD/Deadline: Monday thru Friday t= 1 Before Will lose opp. for $5 on Saturday Behavior R= 1 => 5 5 After Will not lose opp. for $5 on Saturday T 1= Monday 7: 01 am R 1=Get out of bed T 2=Tuesday 7: 01 am R 2=Get out of bed T 3=Wednesday 7: 01 am R 3=Get out of bed T 4=Thursday 7: 01 am R 4=Get out of bed T 5=Friday 7: 01 am R 5=Get out of bed
Inferred Theoretical Contingency Before Fear of loss of $5 on Saturday Behavior R= 1 5 After No fear of loss of $5 on Saturday
Note What’s a homogeneous response sequence? R 1 through R 5 is the same response— getting out of bed. What’s a heterogeneous response sequence? So suppose each response is different.
Now an even more real example where each response is different.
WRITING A PAPER – AN ANALOG TO A HETEROGENEOUS RESPONSE CHAIN SD/Deadline: 9 PM Monday thru Friday/ T=1 Before Will lose opp. to see a movie on Saturday Behavior R= 1 5 R 1=M Research R 2=T Writes intro R 3=W Writes method section R 4=TH Writes results and discussion R 5=F Edit the paper 5 After Will not lose opp. to see a movie on Saturday
Now let’s apply this to helping Derrick
Derrick – Ineffective Natural Contingency SD/Deadline: 5 min before leaving school Before Derrick will have poor grades Behavior After Derrick puts the materials in his book bag Derrick will probably have slightly better grades
Gum Ball Performance Management Contingency SD/Deadline: 5 min. before leaving school After Before Behavior Will lose opp. for gum balls Derrick puts the materials in his book bag Will not lose opp. for gum balls
But now lets get a little more complex.
AN ANALOG TO A HETEROGENEOUS RESPONSE SEQUENCE SD/Deadline: T= 1 Before Will lose opp. or gum balls 3 Behavior R= 1 3 After Will not lose opp. for gum balls T 1=5 min. before leaving school R 1= Put the material in the book bag T 2=2 seconds before leaving school R 2=Carry book bag home T 3=Before time to start homework, (e. g. 2 hrs before bed time) R 3=Put the material on the table
Inferred Theoretical Contingency Before Fear of loss of opp. for gum balls Behavior R= 1 3 After No fear of loss of opp. for gum balls
