New England • Settled by a religious group known as the Puritans Their religion shaped people’s lives and the government
Puritans • Everyone had to go to church • Only men who were church members could vote or serve in town government
Many New Englanders were farmers however, the ocean also shaped the region's economy.
Fishing and shipbuilding brought many craftspeople and businesses to coastal towns and cities

The Middle Colonies • Most of the colonies were ruled by a proprietor • Strong farming economy • New York and Philadelphia were the centers of shipping, trade, and culture

City Life in the Middle Colonies • People owned businesses • Worked as shopkeepers, craftspeople or laborers • Children learned a job or craft
