The Thirteen Colonies – 1775 - Each colony had own system of self-government, based largely on land-owning farmers who voted & served - Slaves in VA, Carolinas, & GA - Virginia first colony (1607) Georgia last colony (1733) - 1 million colonists by 1749 2. 2 million by about 1765

English/Colonial Trade • Mercantilism – national self-sufficiency & acquiring gold and silver • Colonies expected to supply materials that mother England lacked, AND, not produce goods England already had • Navigation Acts (1651) – English laws restricting colonial trade • Most colonials goods exported to England & most imported goods were English • Glorious Revolution in England (1688) – change of power with monarchs • Salutary Neglect (1688) – England would relax regulations as longs as colonists continued economic loyalty

French & Indian War (Seven Years War) • • • France & Great Britain HUGE rivals for a world empire by 1750 s Their empires collided in modern-day Pittsburgh area War begins in 1754 at Fort Necessity (w/ a young George Washington) French had mostly Native allies, but some turned to the Brits War officially ended in 1763 with Treaty of Paris (Britis – and colonies – WON!) • War hurts colonists – Proclamation of 1763 & new taxes and economic restrictions like the Sugar Act
