Ø What is the TOEFL test? §The Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL) is an examination that is administered by the Educational Testing Service ( ETS) and is used to evaluate a nonnative English speaker’s proficiency in the English language. Many North American colleges and universities, as well as a large number of institutions , agencies, and programs, ask for official TOEFL test scores during the administration process.

You will be asked to read three to five passages and answer 1214 comprehension questions about each passage. All of the information needed to answer the questions can be found within the passage. The reading section is divided into two-to-three separately timed parts.

You will have 30 minutes to plan, write, and revise your essay. • Typically, an effective essay will contain a minimum of 300 words. Your essay will be judged on the quality of your writing. This includes the development of your ideas, the organization of your essay, and the quality and accuracy of the language you use to express your ideas.

Ø Tips to be successful 1. When studying, be sure to make use of mock tests. There is not a lack of resources that will help you practice for the test. You can find several sites that provide either complete tests or specific parts of it to help you practice. Apart from this, there also several books available in bookstores that will be valuable guides for the learner. 2. Because the test is largely focused on English language skills, if you feel that your language skills are not up to par, you will need to either enroll into English teaching institutes, or find someone who will be able to teach you personally. There also several coaching centers that can train you for TOEFL 3. Don't forget to time yourself during your practice sessions. Carry a watch with you to time each activity that you do. Do not be tempted to spend too much time on any section or task. Since the test is rather long, and there is quite a bit of writing involved, work on your stamina!
