Possible answer Valentine, Havisham and Ann Hathaway ass detail the painful side of love. In ‘Valentine’ Duffy highlights how a relationship can decline and become oppressive or even violent. In ‘Havisham’ Duffy explores the bitterness that can be caused by a failed relationship. Finally, in ‘Ann Hathaway’ Duffy addresses the loss of love after the death of a partner.

Printed Poem Relationships can change from being loving to being upsetting. “it will blind

Printed Poem Relationships can change from being loving to being upsetting. “it will blind you with tears like a lover” A simile is used here to suggest that in the same way an onion cause tears, so can a relationship. Also the word choice ‘blind’ has violent connotations and suggests that sometimes we refuse or cannot see that a relationship is being damaging to us.

Second Poem Also in Havisham the speaker has been completely changed following being jilted

Second Poem Also in Havisham the speaker has been completely changed following being jilted by her partner. “I've dark green pebbles for eyes” The colour green is associated with jealousy which suggests that the speaker has grown envious of others who are able to have the happily married life that she craved. The metaphor that compares her eyes to pebbles suggests that she has hardened and lost the emotions that she once would have been able to express.

Second poem Also in Havisham we see how she struggled after the failure of

Second poem Also in Havisham we see how she struggled after the failure of her relationship. “whole days in bed cawing noooo at the wall” The word choice ‘cawing’ is associated with an animal so serves to dehumanize Havisham suggesting that she feels barely human following her experience. Also the elongated word choice ‘noooo’ suggests the long, drawn out painful heartbreak that she has experienced.

Third Poem In Ann Hathaway the speaker attempts to remember the love shared with

Third Poem In Ann Hathaway the speaker attempts to remember the love shared with her husband following his death. “I hold him in the casket of my widows head as he held me upon that next best bed” The comparison of her mind to a casket suggests that her memories are the best way to protect her husbands memory as just as a casket protects the body, so too would she protect her memories. Although this is a morbid word choice that suggests the pain associated with the death of a loved one we see Hathaway strive to rmember the best times she shared with her husband.
