Look back over Act 1 Scene 2 from line 380 (Enter FERDINAND and ARIEL, invisible, playing and singing) to the end of the scene and Act 3 Scene 1. Find evidence to support the statements on the next slide. Try to find evidence from both scenes.

Prospero uses his magical props to help him perform sorcery and ensure that he controls the island. Miranda is a compassionate character. Miranda seems to be a very innocent, naïve character. Miranda is a lonely character. Ferdinand is a romantic character. Both Miranda and Ferdinand are impulsive characters. Ferdinand is a brave and noble character. Miranda can be a rebellious character. Miranda doesn’t have any experience of life beyond the island. Ferdinand Miranda are a good match. Prospero could be considered to be a tyrant. Prospero can put on a façade to hide his true feelings. Prospero is a good father who only wants the best for his daughter. The theme of love is present in both scenes.
Extended response (1 page max. ) Read the passage from Act 1 Scene 2 (from MIRANDA: ‘There’s nothing ill can dwell in such a temple…’ to MIRANDA: ‘This is unwonted / Which now came from him. ’ (lines 457 -504) How does it contribute to your view of the relationships between Prospero, Miranda and Ferdinand? In your answer: • look closely at the language, imagery and tone of the passage; • comment on what the passage suggests about Prospero as a father in the play.
