The SWFP COMPASS Project Richard Lawford on behalf of the COMPASS Team Morgan State University Side Event: GEOGLOWS and the Harmonization of GEO Water Activities
Compass Mission / Objectives and Goals Mission To provide comprehensive assessments for global water resources to aid in planning and management water resources on multiple scales. Goals 1) To develop a prototype assessment system and use it to produce a suite of potential products. 2) To operationalize the system and begin producing routine assessments. Compass Geographical Scope Methodology Develop a cloud-based system that accepts multiple data streams to produce a suite of products for use by different agencies and programmes. Project Governance Structure Under the management of SWFP a distributed capability for undertaking assessments and interpreting the results will be maintained. The products will be global but will be validated through regional studies. One of the first areas where regional studies are being planned is Australia. GEOGLOWS and the Harmonization of GEO Water Activities
Compass Significant achievements in 2016 -2017 Achievement 1 After several workshops and meeting a conceptual plan and marketing document have been developed. Achievement 2 Meetings continue to been held with potential funders and contributors. GEOGLOWS and the Harmonization of GEO Water Activities
Compass Plans and Deliverables for 2018 -2019 Deliverables 2018: Develop a system design and an implementation plan that will be presented at the WWF. 2018: Prototype assessment system will be developed and tested. General Plans Continue to seek partners and funders for the system Define a pilot project where global products would be prepared and validated against regional products. GEOGLOWS and the Harmonization of GEO Water Activities
Compass Plans for cross SBA linkages and SDG support Links to GEO and its SBAs The assessments will have potential to link with food, energy, ecosystems/biodiversity and health among others. Contributions to SDGs The information from this system will contribute to Water 6. 4 directly and to other targets such as 6. 6. The product suite will include an SDG report card. Challenges and Issues: This is a program that will require substantial development work. Efforts are underway to attract the funding required for moving forward in an accelerated manner.
