The Sun HS-ESS 1 -1. Develop a model based on evidence to illustrate the life span of the sun and the role of nuclear fusion in the sun’s core to release energy that eventually reaches Earth in the form of radiation. HS-ESS 1 -3. Communicate scientific ideas about the way stars, over their life cycle, produce elements.
Composition of the Sun • All of the elements that we have on Earth originated, or came from, the stars. Our sun is the central figure in our galaxy. • Scientists use a star’s light to determine what type of elements exist in a star. We can also deduce the temperature, density, and pressure of the gas. Draw a spectrum:
How do we get warmth and light from the sun? • Nuclear fusion – the process by which nuclei of small atoms combine to form a new, more massive nucleus; the process releases energy. • Inside the sun, the atomic process of nuclear fusion releases huge amounts of energy. A hydrogen atom has one proton and one electron, but the electron get ripped away from the proton. This process creates the heat and light of the sun. • Draw nuclear fusion:
The Sun’s Interior • The core of the sun makes of up 25% of the sun’s total diameter of 1, 390, 000 km. The core of the sun is made up of ionized gas because no solid or liquid can withstand the intense pressure and heat (15, 000°C). • Radiative zone – the sun’s interior that is between the core and the convective zone and in which energy moves by radiation. • Convective zone – the region of the sun’s interior that is between the radiative zone and the photosphere and in which energy is carried upward by convection. • Photosphere – the visible surface of the sun.
The Sun’s Atmosphere • Photosphere – the innermost layer of the sun’s atmosphere. The name means “sphere of light. ” The photosphere is made of gases that have risen from the convective zone. The temperature is 6, 000°C, and the energy given off is in the form of visible light. • Chromosphere – the thin layer of the sun that is just above the photosphere and that glows a reddish color during eclipses. • Corona – the outermost layer of the sun’s atmosphere. • Create your cross-section of the sun.
