WWk • The history of our sun, its life span, and where it belongs in our solar system.
History • The sun was created through fusion, which is two protons colliding and forming helium. • Aristarchus was the first person to claim that earth orbited the sun.
History • Pythagoras in 6 th century B. C. believed the Earth rotated around the sun. • Aristotle claimed otherwise and believed the Earth was the center of the universe.
History • In 16 th century Copernicus restated that the sun was in fact the center of the universe. At least to us. • In 17 th century Galileo proved this with the telescope.
The Sun’s Life • It has been shining for 4. 5 billion years • Is expected to shine for another 3 -4 billion years • This puts it right in the middle of its life time. • Sorry, no sun explosion for any of our generation to see.
Its Relativeness • It is a medium sized star, a yellow dwarf. • We are 149, 600 km away from the sun • This distance gives us the perfect balnce of the suns heat.
Its Relativeness • The Sun contains 99. 8% of the solar systems mass. (Jupiter contains most of the rest) • Its polarity reverses approximately every 11 years.
Its Relativeness • The Sun has been watched almost since humans have walked the Earth. • Many civilizations have worshipped it as a God. • Random Fact: In 164, the Sun started a 75 year period where there was no sunspot activity.
