What does The Summerill Group do? We negotiate and submit proposals to the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security for the housing of federal prisoners in local jails, working throughout the United States.

What do I do? The ultimate goal of my research is to do a project with San Bernardino county in California and find ways to interact with their inmate population in an effort to help them rejoin society without recidivating. We want to find ways to connect them back to their families and the world. We would eventually do this throughout all 50 states.

For example; We would introduce them to smartphones with restrictions but gives them the ability to communicate with their friends and family. Even studying the way they eat- giving them varied menus. We would study this and how the individual responds to access. We would then give this information to officials and see how we can work with them to improve recidivism rates.

So, we know what you do but as remote research intern… where do you work?

From home, school, anywhere! I create my own workspace via a virtual desktop. (I also set my own hours!)

Our virtual desktop is similar to Le Moyne’s VMWARE CLIENT. The one we use to access our H: and shared drive on campus computers. What does this mean? It means I can access my files and work anywhere our software is installed (which takes about 3 seconds to download). Then Mr. Summerill or his associates can see my work whenever. Just think of the cloud.

When I need to communicate (question, concern, etc) I just call my site supervisor or email her. What else? This is also how I receive assignments and information on new projects. Cloud technology helps us stay connected without needing to be in the same room.
