The Stone Age Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic

The Stone Age Period from about 2. 5 million years ago to about 5500

The Stone Age Period from about 2. 5 million years ago to about 5500 years ago During this period, stone was the most often used material to make tools It can be divided into three main areas: Paleolithic Mesolithic Neolithic

Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) From about 2. 5 million years to about 12 000

Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) From about 2. 5 million years to about 12 000 years ago. Humans were hunters and gatherers during this period They ate nuts and berries, plant roots and other vegetation that grew around their camp. Would also eat the meat that other animals left behind after a kill. Sometimes killed small animals or birds, occasionally a larger animal When food ran out in an area, humans moved on and set up a temporary camp in another location.

Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) These early humans learned to make tools to help them

Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) These early humans learned to make tools to help them get food. First tools were simple. They used: Pointed sticks for digging roots Sharpened piece of rock for cutting meat and scraping animal skins With knowledge and use, humans became more sophisticated tool makers Humans would create: arrows, spears, knives and harpoons

Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) From about 12 000 to 10 000 years ago. Earth

Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) From about 12 000 to 10 000 years ago. Earth warmed and glaciers melted. Vegetation and animal life began to change; human life also changed. People remained as hunters and gatherers but also learned to harvest wild wheat and barley. Enabled humans to stay in one place for longer periods of time. Also developed new tools, such as the scythe to help harvest crops.

Neolithic (New Stone Age) From about 10 000 to about 5500 years ago. Beginning

Neolithic (New Stone Age) From about 10 000 to about 5500 years ago. Beginning of this period marked by an important event in human life FARMING Humans began to produce food instead of gathering it. Humans began to settle in one place, grow crops and tend animals (sheep, goats, pigs, and cattle). New tools included: Sickles for cutting grain Stones for grinding grain Pots for storing food Looms for weaving cloth Began to grind and polish stone to make tools.
