The Start & The Starting Block • Starting positions in events at all distances shall be numbered from left to right, facing the direction of running. • In races up to and including 400 m (including the relays), a crouch start and the use of starting blocks are compulsory. The commands shall be “On your marks” and “Set”. • In races longer than 400 m, all starts shall be made from a standing position. The command shall be “On your marks”. • When in position on the track, no part of the starting block shall overlap the start line or extend into another lane
False Start • An athlete, after assuming a full and final starting position, shall not commence his start until after receiving the report of the gun. If, in the judgement of the Starter he does so any earlier, it shall be a false start. • Except in Combined Events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), any athlete responsible for a false start shall be disqualified by the Starter.
The race • In races including at least one bend, the direction of running and walking shall be left-hand inside. The lanes shall be numbered with the left-hand inside lane numbered 1. • In all races run in lanes, each athlete shall keep within his allocated lane from start to finish. This shall also apply to any portion of a race run in lanes. • The 800 m event shall be run in lanes as far as the nearer edge of the break line where athletes may leave their respective lanes. The break line shall be an arced line marked after the first bend.
Timing and Photo Finish Three methods of timekeeping shall be recognised as official: (a) Hand Timing (b) Fully Automatic Timing obtained from a Photo Finish System (Official Timing) (c) Timing provided by a Transponder System for competitions
Hurdles • All races shall be run in lanes and each athlete shall keep to, and go over the hurdles in, his own lane throughout. Failure to do so will result in a disqualification. In addition, an athlete shall be disqualified, if: • (a) his foot or leg is, at the instant of clearance, beside the hurdle (on either side), below the horizontal plane of the top of any hurdle; or • (b) in the opinion of the Referee, he deliberately knocks down any hurdle. The standard distances shall be: • Men, U 20 Men and U 18 Boys: 110 m, 400 m • Women, U 20 Women and U 18 Girls: 100 m, 400 m

Steeplechase Races • The standard distances shall be: 2000 m and 3000 m. • There shall be 28 hurdle jumps and 7 water jumps included in the 3000 m event, and 18 hurdle jumps and 5 water jumps in the 2000 m event. • Each athlete shall go over or through the water and shall go over each hurdle. Failure to do so will result in a disqualification. In addition, an athlete shall be disqualified, if • (a) he steps to the one side or other of the water jump, or • (b) his foot or leg is, at the instant of clearance, beside the hurdle (on either side), below the horizontal plane of the top of any hurdle. Provided this Rule is observed, an athlete may go over each hurdle in any manner.
Relay Races • The standard distances shall be: 4 × 100 m, 4 x 400 m and Medley Relay (200 m-100 m-300 m-400). • In the 4 x 100 m and for the first and second changes in the Medley Relay, each takeover zone shall be 30 m long. For the third change in the Medley Relay and in the 4 x 400 m and longer relays each takeover zone shall be 20 m long of which the scratch line is the centre. • The zones shall start and finish at the edges of the zone lines nearest the start line in the running direction. For each takeover conducted in lanes, a designated official shall ensure that the athletes are correctly placed in their takeover zone. • The Umpires must ensure that each athlete from each team takes his position in the correct lanes or position
• If dropped, the baton shall be recovered by the athlete who dropped it, after retrieving it, the athlete must return at least to the point where it was last in his hand, before continuing in the race. • The baton shall be passed within the takeover zone. • The 4 × 100 m race shall be run entirely in lanes. • The Medley Relay race should be run in lanes for the first two legs, as well as that part of the third leg up to the nearer edge of the break line, where athletes may leave their respective lanes (two bends in lanes). • The 4 × 400 m race shall be run in lanes for the first leg, as well as that part of the second leg up to the nearer edge of the break line, where athletes may leave their respective lanes (three bends in lanes)
