The Spread of Revolution How did Revolution spread in 1830? Revolts in Paris were major causes of the spread of revolution. Countries such as Poland Belgium desired freedom. Belgium was successful in achieving freedom, but Poland failed. • The revolts in Paris inspired uprisings to break out all over Europe. • Most uprisings were suppressed by the military, but rebels did win changes from conservative governments. • Revolutions frightened rulers who later encouraged reform.

Belgium • The Congress of Vienna united Austria, the Netherlands, and the Kingdom of Holland under the Dutch king. • The Congress of Vienna wanted to create a strong barrier to help prevent French expansion. • Belgian and Dutch individuals had different languages, religion, and economic interests which made the Belgians resent the new arrangement. • The uprisings in Paris in 1830 caused a revolution in Belgium. • France knew the Belgians were threatening but they believed they would benefit from the separation of Belgium and Holland. France later supported the Belgian demand for independence. • In 1831, Belgium became an independent state with a liberal constitution.
