People tend to incorrectly use the words ‘mentor’ and ‘sponsor’ interchangeably. We’ve all had mentors who have offered advice, but sponsors are the people inside our company who have helped us get to senior levels. Sponsors are what you really need to succeed. ©Catalyst 2017 — Gordon M. Nixon, Former President & CEO, RBC 13
MENTORING VS. SPONSORSHIP: ©Catalyst 2018 A mentor talks with you, a sponsor talks about you… “Mentoring is about development, sponsoring is about advancement” 14
Sponsorship: A Winning Trifecta • Sponsorship benefits the individual. • Sponsorship benefits the sponsor. • Sponsorship benefits organizations, developing more committed, satisfied leaders. © Catalyst 2018 15
TIPS FOR ATTRACTING A SPONSOR Be Seen • Make yourself and your work visible • Use strategies for making your accomplishments known • Example: forward “thank you” emails to potential sponsors Take Risks • You don’t need to satisfy all criteria for a new opportunity • Stretch yourself and give yourself room to grow Ask for What You Want ©Catalyst 2017 • Identify your own priorities and potential growth opportunities • Articulate them to your manager and potential sponsors 16
TIPS FOR BEING A SPONSOR Challenge Assumptions • Get to know the sponsee - find out about aspirations, previous experience, etc. • Take risks with someone different from you • Understand that sponsorship is good leadership Provide Strategic Guidance • High-level advice, guidance and targeted feedback Advocate for the Sponsee ©Catalyst 2017 • Advocate when opportunities arise, such as projects or assignments • Meet regularly (1 x per month or 1 x per quarter) • Introduce your sponsee to your network 17
