The Spirit Of Truth And The Spirit Of Error: Jehovah’s Witnesses 1 John 4: 6

The Godhead The Bible teaches that there is one God, existing in three Persons simultaneously. Matthew 3: 16 -17; Matthew 28: 19 Jehovah’s Witnesses believe the doctrine of the Godhead (Trinity) is a fabrication perpetrated by Satan, and that there was a time that Jehovah existed alone in universal space.

Jesus Christ The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is God, the second Person of the Godhead, Savior of the world, and that He was raised from the dead bodily. John 1: 1; 1 Corinthians 15: 17 Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus was the first Son that Jehovah created, and therefore one of many lesser gods; Christ was Michael the angel before His incarnation; after his crucifixion, Christ was raised as a spirit, but not bodily.

The Holy Spirit The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead, equal in deity with the Father and the Son. Acts 5: 3 -4; Romans 8: 9 Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the Holy Spirit is not a person, but rather a force. One of their writers called the Holy Spirit “the spirit of a holy person who has once been in the flesh. ”

Sin The Bible teaches that sin is the transgressing of God’s law, and that all have done so. 1 John 3: 4; Romans 3: 23 Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Adam brought sin upon the human race by his disobedience, but also that at death, Adam’s “returning to dust” was a return to non-existence.

Redemption The Bible teaches that we are redeemed or bought back from sin by the shedding of Christ’s perfect blood on the cross. Ephesians 1: 7; 1 Peter 1: 18 -19 Jehovah’s Witnesses believe the life Christ laid down at his crucifixion was a human life only, and not to be understood as a sacrifice for the sin of mankind. As a man, he merely laid down a life equal to the life Adam forfeited.

Salvation The Bible teaches that all who call upon Christ in faith will be saved. This salvation is accomplished through His sacrifice plus nothing. John 1: 12; Ephesians 2: 8 -9 Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that mankind does not need to be saved. The 144, 000 are guaranteed Heaven; and the other Jehovah’s Witnesses are promised life on earth forever. “The Watchtower” once stated that it is to “twist” the words of Jesus in John 3 to suggest that people need to be born again.

Retribution The Bible teaches that the wages of sin is spiritual death in a literal, burning hell. Romans 6: 23; Revelation 20: 15 Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the doctrine of Hell is a myth. They teach that when a person dies, the soul dies also and is unconscious. They deny the teaching of a literal, conscious suffering.
