Introduction • Essential Question: How did the success of the Jamestown Colony inspire the creation of more colonies and how were these colonies similar yet different in their development?

Southern Colonies
Maryland Colony • In 1632, The King Charles I granted Lord Baltimore the right to establish a colony in Maryland. • Initially the land was set up as a haven for English and Irish Catholics. During this time the Reformation was occurring through Europe and Protestantism was becoming more popular. • Act of Toleration: Passed in the Colony during 1649, allowed religious freedom for all. • Eventually Maryland would become a successful tobacco colony.
Lord Baltimore
Carolinas • Established in 1670 by a Joint-Stock Company. • Charter was granted by King Charles II. • Originally encompasses North and South Carolina, in 1729 it split into two separate colonies. • Became a big producer of rice and indigo. • Capital was Charleston, located on the coast. Became a major port
Georgia • Established in 1732 • Led by James Oglethorpe • Colony was designed for two purposes • A. Protect South Carolina from the Spanish in Florida • B. Safe haven for imprisoned British Debtors. • People were forced to work land, abstain from alcohol, and could not own large plantations. • Was the last of the 13 original colonies to be settled.
