Function • Provide support for the body • Protects the body’s soft tissues • Provides attachment points for skeletal muscles
Parts of the Skeletal System • Bones – Tough rigid organs that provide a framework for the human body • Joints – A place where two or more bones meet – Typically allow movement/mobility • Ligaments – Fibrous elastic tissue that connects one bone to another • Cartilages – Tough but flexible tissue that is typically found at the end of bones at joints
Classification of Bones • Long – Longer than they are wide – Example: Your shin bone (tibia) • Short – As long as they are wide; often cubed or round – Example: Your wrist bones (ex: trapezoid) • Flat – Vary in size; are usually very thin – Example: bones in your skull (ex: frontal) • Irregular – All other bones that don’t follow a specific pattern – Example: bones of your spine (ex: vertebrae)
