THE SIX KINGDOMS An Introduction to Each ARCHAEBACTERIA
THE SIX KINGDOMS An Introduction to Each
ARCHAEBACTERIA • Single-celled • No nucleus • Oldest type of life on earth – up to 3. 4 billion years old • Some are chemosynthetic and some are photosynthetic • Often found in extreme environments • Deep sea thermal vents, swamps, etc. • Genetically very different than other bacteria
EUBACTERIA • Single-celled • No nucleus • Strong cell wall • Widely distributed around the earth • Some cause disease in humans
PROTISTS • Mostly unicellular • Cells have a nucleus • Tend to live in moist environments • Some can move from place to place • Can be autotrophic or heterotrophic • Existed up to 2 billion years ago • Some are plant-like, some are more animal-like, and some are even fungus-like
FUNGI • Heterotrophic • Unicellular or multicellular • Do not move from place to place • Appeared over 400 million years ago • They are the earth’s decomposers
PLANTAE • Multicellular • Photosynthetic • Do not move from place to place • Cells contain a cell wall and chloroplasts • Cells organized into tissues and organ systems • Over 400 million years old
ANIMALIA • Mulicellular • Heterotrophs • Almost all can move from place to place • Cells form tissues that form organ systems • First appeared 600 million years ago
