The Signal Weekly bulletin of the Rotary Club of Signal Hill, District 9350, Cape Town, South Africa Next Meeting Thursday 22 nd March 2012 Royal Cape Yacht Club 12: 30 for 13: 00 Attendance : Peter Hugo Grace : Charles Myers Sergeant : Deon de Wet Intro & Thanks : Mike Saxby. Speaker : Dr Keith Wimble 071 4819760 Topic : Indebtedness to Rotary I would like to thank all those who participated in the discussions at the meeting. Although we did not manage to get through as much as I would have liked, the points we covered are as follows. I wanted to discuss future projects, but realised that we would need to go through all the current "ongoing" projects before anything else. - One to One - We agreed that we would continue to take part in this and that we would once again pay R 1 000, 00 towards the bus costs and to also pay for the packets of sweets. The upcoming event on 19 th August. - Debates - It was put forward that although this does not seem to be a "Rotary" project anymore, other than supplying chairpeople, it was still a service to schools and therefore to be continued. However the subject is to be discussed further with David Lotz and Johann Gerber. How do we get the "Rotary" back into the project. - Calypso Cricket - All agreed that this is to be continued with. In 2011/12 year we contributed R 10 000, 00 towards the bus expenses. Dennis suggested that this be increased to R 12 000, 00 for 2012/13. Michelle would like to approach Sporting Chance about them introducing "street cricket" in the part of the Delft area where we are working. http: //rotaryclubofsignalhill. weebly. com 1
Weekly bulletin of the Rotary Club of Signal Hill, District 9350, Cape Town, South Africa - Zonnebloem Home for the Aged - Dave Masterson had just arranged for a delivery of "adult nappies" to be made to them. However it seems that no one has actually been out to see them for a while to see if there is anything further we can do to help. It was agreed that a visit should be done. R 4 000, 00 is to be provisionaly budgeted for the "nappies" only for 2012/13. - Nerina Gardens - The project is now complete and for the moment nothing further is to be done. - Collect-a-Can - This has been run by Richard Predergast for many months. With Richard's resignation from the club, the collections have stopped. It was agreed to approach clubs in the Seapoint area to see if any of them would be able to supply volunteers to assist once a month. A list of recipiants needs to be obtained from Richard. - Hand Washing day - This was such a success, that it will be run again in October 2012. Please speak to Mike Saxby about any ideas or how to assist. - Abedare Primary School in Delft - There are several aspects to this project. Library - President Michelle has been liaising with the Principal and said that the library is slowly filling up with books, second hand new, many of which Michelle has sourced. She has also arranged for a Librarian to teacher/s at the school, how to run and maintain the library. As yet it is unknown what will still be necessary to get the library fully functional. Michelle will be running this project. Dictionaries, Prize Giving, and Stationery - These still need to be discussed, but I will budget for R 35 400, 00 for these items. - Safe House - Emile reported that for the moment the Safe House will remain where it is on a month to month basis. A premises has been found that will need funding of R 1. 5 million. It would not be possible to use a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation. Outside/Corporate funding will be needed for this. As far as getting a vehicle for them is concerned, this will need to wait until their future is secure. We will continue on an ah hoc basis, as in the past, with providing finance for items such as repairs to appliances and school uniforms. Emile said that the donations from Collect-a-Can had been very important to them. Page number 2
Weekly bulletin of the Rotary Club of Signal Hill, District 9350, Cape Town, South Africa Fund raising and Grants - Race Day - At this point we ran out of time, and very quickly had to talk about the Race Day fundraiser. We agreed that the Race Day was to take place as arranged on the 1 st September 2012 and that announcements need to go out as soon as possible. Dave Masterson will be away for a good portion of July and August and therefore requested that he not be called upon to be chaiman of this committee. I requested that if this was to be a succesfull fund raiser, everyone needs to get involved. The commitee needs to be finalised and to meet as soon as possible to get arrangements in place. I would like to us to aim for R 80 000. - Other ways of raising funds Bridge Drive R 5 000 District Simplified Grant R 5 000 Overseas Clubs and Matching Grants - A committee is needed to actively search for overseas clubs as partners for matching grants. If we are wanting to do any major projects, then finding overseas partner clubs and applying for Matching Grants will be extremely important. Estimated Benevolent and Club funds at 1 st July 2012 - Benovelant Funds - Estimated will be approximately R 100 000 - Club Funds - Estimated will be approximately R 150 000 Several members have given me an indication of what they would be prepared to assist with. However as you can see from the above, there are several areas that need to be covered. In the coming months I will be trying to get planning done for the next year and will be assigning everyone to a portfolio. Once again thanks to all for your input. If I have missed anything or have got anything incorrect, please let me know. Many thanks Eve Page number 3
Weekly bulletin of the Rotary Club of Signal Hill, District 9350, Cape Town, South Africa Argus Cycle Tour – Thanks From: Eion Brown Sent: 13 March 2012 12: 16 PM To: David Lotz Subject: RE: Cycle Tour Start - 2012 Hi David, Many, many thanks for your help on Sunday. Much appreciated. The Start went very well which means that all helpers performed as requested which is most gratifying. The fact that Signal Hill has helped for many years now is very helpful. The few new helpers each year are ìnitiated into the system with ease. Once again could you please pass on my thanks to all who were helping and if anyone would like to make some constructive criticism or put forward any ideas for improvement I would be grateful to receive them. Thanks also for your hospitality in having John, Vicky and I to your luncheon. Your Ambassadorial Scholar was very interesting. There always a few funnies that get thrown at us each year that need communication. Have a good day and thanks again.
