THE SIGAM MOBILITY GRADES A population specific measure for lower limb amputees
WHAT IS IT? A valid measure of lower limb amputee mobility suitable for routine clinical use and the monitoring of change A patient self-reporting questionnaire from which the clinician can assign the appropriate ‘grade’ for a patient’s mobility A six-grade scale that define mobility in terms of help required to mobilize, distance, use of aids, and ability to negotiate difficult terrain and weather conditions
GRADES A • Limb wearing abandoned or cosmetic use only B • Therapeutic use only for transfers, walking in therapy or use with nurses C • Walks on level ground less than or equal to 50 m with/without aids D • Walks outdoors on level ground only, in good weather, more than 50 m with/without aids E • Walks more than 50 m. No aids, except in adverse terrain or weather. F • Normal or near normal gait
GUIDELINES FOR USE OF SIGAM Start at top with question 1. Depending on the answer ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ follow the arrows to assign one grade A-E Once you reach Grade…, that is the grade assigned. Do not proceed, except Grades C & D to assign a sub-grade Sub-grades apply to the walking aid used most frequently
