The superior and inferior glenohumeral ligaments can be confusing in their terminology or at least in how the terminology is used. The superior ligament consists of superior, middle and inferior bands, these are often mistermed superior, inferior and middle glenohumeral ligaments and this is the confusion. The inferior glenohumeral ligament lies inferior to the humeral head and consists of three bands also, the anterior, posterior and middle. Interactive Shoulder (c) 2000 Primal Pictures 12

Note the size of the humeral head in relation to the glenoid fossa. It has about 5 x the surface area. This demonstrates and anatomical law that states that the large the discrepancy in surface areas of joint partners, the larger the potential for movement. Also note the degree of horizontality in the trapezoid ligament, this makes it very difficult to palpate and just about impossible to friction. Interactive Shoulder (c) 2000 Primal Pictures 19

The corocohumeral ligament is depicted as a single band attaching to the greater tuberosity. For some reason the anterior band of the lesser tuberosity is not described. Interactive Shoulder (c) 2000 Primal Pictures 28

In the lateral view below, it is clear how the rotator cuff pull medially and shunt the humeral head into the glenoid and thereby provide considerable stability during movement of the shoulder. Interactive Shoulder (c) 2000 Primal Pictures 34
